Weekly Tasks
Task 1
We were asked to have a group discussion on the answers to the following questions:
-
What is a pilot/prototype?
A first impression of an unfinished product, usually created with critique in mind to develop it until it's ready to be launched (proof of concept)
-
What are developments?
Different renditions of the initial product idea to improve upon the concept. This is where the experimenting and changes are made
-
What is a business model canvas?
A breakdown of your product/service that is sectioned in a specific way created by Ostrerwalder
-
What is a reflective analysis?
Reflective analysis is a style of writing that allows you to process your personal experiences. When performing reflective analysis, you may discuss a particular problem or event, thinking critically about what happened, why, and what you learned.
-
What is design thinking?
Identifying the problem and creating innovative solutions to prototype and test involving five phases; Emphasise, define, ideate, prototype, and test. This process looks different for every field and project as at any point you may start from the beginning again.
-
What is a reflective journal?
A day-to-day reflective analysis of your current project or event in which you look at what you're creating, what you are learning, how you feel about it, what you have failed, and what you have improved upon.
Task 2
For task two we were asked to write continuously for 6 minutes in a reflective manner, during this we were asked to follow these questions if we could
1.Reflection
Discuss any issues or concerns that you may have in relation to your practice
2.Analysis
Respond to the following questions
-
What is happening here?
-
What assumptions am I making?
-
What does this show about my underlying beliefs about myself and my practise
-
What are the alternative ways of looking at this( eg the clients perspective ?)
3.Action
-
What action can I take?
-
How can I learn from this?
-
How would I respond if this happened again?
Problems and concerns I have with my current practice are that I don’t have any experience or expertise with clients. I’m not sure how to go about engaging with them or where to find them. This will be an extremely difficult process for me to take on but I’m sure I will overcome it. Another concern I have is that the industry is stuffed with interior decorators that is not my job but they are very similar so I’m sure I will be fighting for clients in some way or another. I am assuming that there is no space for me in this overcrowded industry where I’ll constantly be compared to architects and interior decorators and where I will fit into it all. I want to be important in some way or another so maybe I am clout-chasing or maybe I just want to design the homes of famous people. I just know I want to be in some magazine one day or have articles written about the new up-and-coming interior designer but I also have doubts like am I even unique enough to be recognized? Will I be seen in the mountain of people? Will the students I studied with become my competitors? I’m sure from someone on the outside I look like I am full of myself, like I think I am a better designer than everyone else but I believe that I am subpar at best and I’m just really good at looking confident at my work and trying to sell it as the best thing since sliced bread. What will I do about all these self-doubts? I’m not sure. Everyone has some sort of imposter syndrome so I’m sure it will be a couple of years at least before I feel comfortable in my field. What sets me apart is that I’m not afraid to be the dumbest person in the room. I am so willing to learn from those who came before me and to be a sponge of knowledge and techniques that if I am not the best designer then at least I’ll know the most.

Positives
I am passionate about being the best interior designer in my niche
I have all the experience of my HNC and HND
I have a building portfolio of work
I am good at learning new 3D modeling programs
I can hyperfocus on my design in a 3D program and get 10-12 hours of work done in one session
I am pretty digitally literate and could easily make my way around YouTube and video-making
I have a very approachable personality which would be good around a camera
Negatives
Hard to enter a space of known and trusted names
Analytics could be my downfall
I’d need to learn video editing and how to film stuff
3D modeling programs are very expensive
I don’t know how much I trust myself to work to deadlines
Would your nan/kids/grandkids understand it?
I think interior design as a whole is pretty easy to understand as everyone wants to be in a nice space wherever they are and for the social media thing younger people would get it and I think my gran would probably understand if I showed her someone else in that space.
